It is hereby made known that the Executive Officer: Agricultural Product Standards has registered the Karoo Lamb/ Karoo Lam as a South African Geographical Indication (‘GI’) in terms of the “Regulations relating to the protection of Geographical Indications and Designations of Origin used on Agricultural Products intended for sale in the Republic of South Africa” (‘The GI and Designation of Origin Regulations’) as published under no. R 3023 under Government Gazette no. 48015 on 10 February 2023.
Further made known is that the Executive Officer: Agricultural Product Standards in terms of the GI and Designation of Origin Regulations hereby inserts after regulation 24, the following Annexure in respect of the “Applicable Minimum Product Specifications for the registered South African GI Karoo Lamb/ Karoo Lam”.
Record keeping shall be in place to support traceability and record production issues such as feed supplements, vaccinations, medication administered and withdrawal periods, animals bought in, etc.
The abattoirs and the assignees of the Department must ensure that only farms that are confirmed as the Karoo Lamb farms will be allowed to deliver to the registered abattoirs and sold as ‘Karoo Lamb’. Abattoirs are also required to effectively verify origin of animals through the signed and approved ‘removal certificate’ and appropriate declarations by producers. The amount of Karoo Lamb meat sold shall correlate with the number of carcasses produced.
