Exemption granted to Motor Vehicles owned by the Gauteng Provincial Administration and Conditions of Exemption

G-Fleet Number Plate Specifications

 

2. A number plate affixed to a motor vehicle in the G-Fleet must be an embossed aluminium number plate, which must comply with—
(a) SANS1116 "Retro-reflective number plates for motor vehicles", Part 1: "Blank number plates (aluminium)"; and
(b) SANS1116 "Retro-reflective number plates for motor vehicles", Part 2: "Number plates (aluminium)".

 

3. A number plate contemplated in paragraph 2 must—
(a) bear a South African Bureau of Standards certification mark on the bottom right below the licence mark of the Gauteng Province;
(b) bear a security feature positioned immediately below the United Nations Country Sign "ZA" as referred to in paragraph 4(4), and that must—
(i) be 10 mm x 10 mm in size;
(ii) be in the form of a square two-dimensional barcode applied by means of pin stamping;
(iii) be created by using GS1 Standard Data Matrix ECC200 barcodes; and
(iv) carry the unique identification code for each number plate, which must act as the carrier of the information for authentication and track and trace purposes.
(c) bear the mark of the manufacturer and the batch number of the blank plate,—
(i) in the case of blank number plates 520 mm x 113 mm in size, both at the bottom right corner of the dividing line; and
(ii) in the case of blank number plates 250 mm x 205 mm, and 250 mm x 165 mm in size, both at the bottom left corner of the dividing line;
(d) have a white retro-reflective surface;
(e) have letters and figures in red; and
(f) be clearly legible and visible.

 

4. The number plate referred to in paragraph 2 must display—
(a) the national flag—
(i) in the colours specified in SANS 1091: National Colour Code;
(ii) on the top left before the dividing line;
(iii) the dimensions of which must be as follows:
(aa) For the 520 mm x 113 mm and the 250 mm x 205 mm number plates, 35 mm x 23,33 mm;
(bb) for the 250 mm x 165 mm number plate, 18 mm x 12 mm; and
(cc) positioned 11 mm from the left and 13 mm from the top edges of the number plate, in terms of SANS 1116;
(b) a decal, which complies with SANS 1116 that must be permanently affixed to the number plate in the space below the security feature contemplated in paragraph 3(b), and that must—
(i) self-destruct if an attempt is made to remove such decal;
(ii) have a dimension of 36 mm X16 mm with a coloured background with black or white letters and figures depicting the year of expiry of the number plate;
(iii) have a sequential number containing letters identifying the province and a sequence of at least nine figures; and
(iv) have a rectangular two-dimensional barcode of a size 8 mm x 8 mm, which must be used to link the decal to the unique identification code of that number plate;
(c) the country name: "South Africa", in capital Latin characters using bold Arial font not exceeding size 24 and not exceeding 6 mm in height and 40 mm in width, positioned immediately below the national flag;
(d) the United Nations code for South Africa: "ZA", in black, immediately below the county name: "South Africa", and above the square two-dimensional barcode;
(e) a vertical black dividing line, with a width of 2 mm and positioned 60 mm from the left edge of the number plate, and which must separate the graphics on the number plate from the licence number on the number plate;
(f) the word "GAUTENG", on the top of the number plate centred between the dividing line and the right edge of the number plate in black Arial font of a size of 6 mm for all number plates,except number plates of the size 250 mm x 165 mm, which must have wording of the size 4 mm;
(g) the allocated licence number to the right of the dividing line; and
(h) the licence mark of Gauteng Province after the licence number.

 

5. The letters and figures on a number plate must be arranged—
(a) with all the letters and figures in one line;
(b) with the letters preceding the figures in one line and immediately thereunder, the figures and, if applicable, the last letter in one line; or
(c) with the letters or the figures in one line, and immediately thereunder—
(i) the figures and letters;
(ii) the letters and letters; or
(iii) the letters and figures,

and, if applicable, immediately thereunder, the letters in one line.

 

6. The national flag,the country name: "SOUTH AFRICA", the United Nations code: "ZA", and all characters contemplated in this Schedule must be printed under the topcoat of the retro-reflective surface in accordance with SANS:1 116 with translucent ink.

 

7. A number plate complying with the specifications stipulated in this Schedule shall look substantially similar to the Government Vehicle Number Plate (Red) example illustrated below,
