In this act, unless the context otherwise indicated–
"board"
means the Board referred to in section 7;
"chairperson"
means the chairperson of the Board appointed in terms of section 7(2)(a);

"chief executive officer"
means the person appointed in terms of section 10 as the chief executive officer of the CSIR;

"Executive Management Committee"
means the Executive Management Committee referred to in section 8;

"Minister"
means the Minister to whom the administration of this Act has been assigned in terms of section 20;
"regulation"
means a regulation made in terms of this Act;

"research"
means the augmentation and improvement of knowledge through scientific investigations and methods directed towards the scientific and technological requirements of the private and public sectors, including the solution of relevant problems in the national interest, and includes the development, acquisition diffusion, innovation and transfer of expertise and technology;

"the CSIR"
means the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research referred to in section 2;
"this Act"
includes the regulations.
