(1) | The NFDD system or a system designed to perform familial searches may be utilised to conduct familial searches in respect of forensic DNA profiles to identify missing persons or unidentified human remains. |
(2) | A likelihood ratio calculation may be applied to the outcome of the familial search to identify investigative leads in order to enable an investigation officer to— |
(a) | interview family members of near matches; or |
(b) | identify unidentified human remains. |
(3) | The Divisional Commissioner: Detective Service must, after consultation with the Provincial Commissioners, identify specific detectives at national - or provincial level, to be trained in order to investigate and follow-up investigative leads that have been identified by means of familial searches. |
(4) | The National Commissioner must ensure that a training program is developed for detectives referred to in subregulation (3) to ensure that they are properly trained to investigate forensic investigative leads generated by means of familial searches. |
