What are the Consumer Affairs Reports?
The Business Practices Committee, now called the Consumer Affairs Committee since the Act was amended on 14 May 1999, was established in terms of section 2 of the Consumer Affairs (Unfair Business Practices) Act (Act 71 of 1988, previously known as the Harmful Business Practices Act). The purpose of the amended Act is to provide for the prohibition or control of harmful business practices and for matters connected with this.
An "unfair business practice" is any business practice that, directly or indirectly, has or is likely to have the effect of harming the relations between businesses and consumers, unreasonably prejudicing any consumer or deceiving any consumer, or unfairly affecting any consumer.In this respect a "consumer" means any natural person, any other person who the Minister declares to be a consumer or any person who is a consumer for the purposes of this Act in terms of any other law.The Committee reports to the Minister of Trade and Industry.
