Brought to you by SA Legal Academy: The Department of Transport has extended the public consultation period for the draft policy on civil aviation. The extension was formalised via a notice in the Government Gazette, moving the submission deadline from June to July 2025.

In terms of General Notice 3332 published in Government Gazette 52912 on 27 June 2025, the Department of Transport has extended the deadline for input on the draft civil aviation policy to 11 July 2025. This follows the initial publication of the draft policy which originally set a closing date of 22 June 2025.

The proposed policy is intended to align South Africa’s civil aviation regulatory environment with current international agreements and regional frameworks. Key objectives of the draft include:

  • Harmonisation of domestic regulations with international civil aviation standards;
  • Integration of regional aviation frameworks; and
  • Updating safety and security protocols to meet contemporary global requirements.

What this means for you, your business, or your clients

  • For yourself: Professional aviation consultants and legal practitioners must review the draft policy to identify shifts in regulatory standards that may affect professional certifications or advisory duties.
  • For your business: Aviation operators, including commercial airlines and charter services, must evaluate the draft’s alignment with international frameworks and submit any technical objections or support by the revised 11 July 2025 deadline.
  • For your clients: Clients in the logistics, tourism, and transport sectors should be briefed on potential regulatory changes that could impact aviation-related operational costs or cross-border regional compliance requirements.
