IESBA Issues Report on Firm Culture and Governance
Brought to you by SA Accounting Academy: The International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) has released a comprehensive synthesis of academic literature on organizational culture and behavior to inform its ongoing Firm Culture and Governance project.
In terms of the International Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (including International Independence Standards), the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) has published the report “Organizational Culture and Behavior: A Synthesis of Academic Literature.” This publication serves as a foundational component of the IESBA Firm Culture and Governance (FCG) project, which was approved by the Board in December 2024 and is set to commence in 2025.
The FCG project aims to establish a formal culture and governance framework designed to promote and reinforce high standards of ethical behavior among firm leadership, partners, and staff. The synthesis defines ethical culture as a specific subset of organizational culture that dictates ethical or unethical conduct through both formal and informal mechanisms.
The primary objectives of the framework include:
- Developing a reputation for high ethical standards across all service lines;
- Mitigating the risks associated with unethical behavior within the firm; and
- Strengthening public trust and confidence in the professional services provided by accounting firms.
The report provides theoretical insights into how leadership behavior and firm-wide governance structures influence the ethical decision-making processes of individual practitioners.
