Brought to you by SA Legal Academy: The National Assembly’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development has issued a call for public comment on the Judicial Matters Amendment Bill.

The Judicial Matters Amendment Bill was formally introduced in Parliament following Cabinet approval in December 2024. According to the memorandum on the objects of the Bill, the proposed amendments are primarily technical, practical, and non-contentious. These amendments are intended to refine existing legislation and address administrative bottlenecks within the justice system.

Stakeholders and interested parties are required to submit written representations by no later than 10 July 2025. This follows the publication of a committee notice on 25 June 2025, which confirmed the timeline for the legislative review process.

  • For your business: Assess whether the proposed practical refinements to judicial administration will require updates to the firm’s internal compliance manuals or standard operating procedures for court-related matters.
  • For your clients: Advise clients on potential shifts in administrative law or judicial procedures that may impact the execution of their legal strategies or the management of pending litigation.
