SAICA Updates Enhanced Auditor Reporting (EAR) Example Reports

Posted 24 June 2025 Written by Acts Online

Brought to you by SA Accounting Academy: The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) has updated its technical resource page containing example audit reports issued under the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) Enhanced Auditor Reporting (EAR) Rule.

In terms of the EAR Rule issued by the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA), registered auditors are required to provide expanded disclosures in audit reports for Public Interest Entities (PIEs). The updated SAICA repository now contains 50 links to reports issued for entities with financial year ends between 31 December 2024 and 31 March 2025.

The collection includes reports from various sectors, including infrastructure development and construction materials. Practitioners should note the following regarding the repository:

  • The reports are publicly available documents issued after the EAR Rule became effective;
  • The list is not exhaustive of all PIE audit reports issued in the period; and
  • The reports have not been subjected to a formal review or vetting process by SAICA.

Compliance with IRBA Rules is mandatory for all registered auditors under the Auditing Profession Act, No. 26 of 2005. Failure to adhere to these reporting standards may result in disciplinary action by the regulator. Practitioners are advised to review the content of any guidance issued by regulators and professional bodies in this regard.

What this means for you, your business, or your clients

  • For yourself: You should use the repository as a benchmarking tool to understand the practical application of the EAR Rule and ensure your reporting meets the expected regulatory standard.
  • For your business: Audit firms must update their internal templates and quality management systems to ensure that all PIE audit reports comply with the mandatory disclosure requirements of the IRBA EAR Rule.
  • For your clients: PIE clients must be informed that their audit reports will now contain more granular information, which may impact how their financial disclosures are perceived by stakeholders.
