CIPC: Automated Registration for External Companies (Form CoR20.1)

Brought to you by SA Accounting Academy: The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) has transitioned the registration of external companies to an automated system on its e-Services platform. This update specifically relates to the submission of Form CoR20.1.

In terms of the Companies Act, No. 71 of 2008, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) has implemented the online automation of the Registration of External Company (Form CoR20.1). This digital transition became effective from 29 September 2025, replacing previous manual or semi-automated filing methods for foreign entities seeking to register as external companies in South Africa.

To facilitate this transition, the CIPC has published a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) addressing the technical and procedural aspects of the new e-Services workflow. These FAQs are intended to assist practitioners in navigating the automated interface and ensuring that all statutory requirements for external company registration are met during the digital filing process.

The Commission has further indicated that a detailed, step-by-step user guide will be published in due course to provide additional clarity on the system’s functionality. Practitioners are advised to monitor the CIPC website for the release of this technical documentation.
