South African Judicial Education Institute Amendment Bill Tabled
Brought to you by SA Legal Academy: The South African Judicial Education Institute Amendment Bill [B26-2025] was formally tabled in Parliament on 27 October 2025 to address unproclaimed administrative provisions in the principal Act.
The introduction of the Bill follows the publication of the required explanatory summary in the Government Gazette. The primary objective is to refine the South African Judicial Education Institute Act, No. 14 of 2008, particularly in light of certain provisions that have remained unproclaimed since the Act’s inception.
According to Parliamentary papers and records from the Southern African Legal Information Institute (SAFLII), the following sections of the South African Judicial Education Institute Act, No. 14 of 2008 are currently not yet in operation:
- Section 14, which governs the remuneration and conditions of service for the Institute’s staff; and
- Section 19, which provides for the reimbursement of expenses incurred by members of the Council.
The Bill aims to resolve these outstanding matters to ensure the full operational capacity of the Institute, which is responsible for the education and training of judicial officers.
