Brought to you by SA Accounting Academy: The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has updated the ITR12T annual income tax return for trusts to resolve technical issues encountered during the 2025 tax season.

In terms of the Income Tax Act, No. 58 of 1962, and the administrative requirements for trust compliance, SARS implemented a system-wide fix on 1 November 2024. This update addresses six specific technical issues identified by practitioners within the 2025 Trust income tax return (ITR12T) environment.

The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) confirmed that the fixes target functional errors that previously hindered the accurate completion and submission of trust returns. Practitioners still encountering difficulties are required to:

  • Log a formal query via the SAICA Member Portal;
  • Select the ‘SARS Operational’ subject category; and
  • Provide comprehensive screenshots of the error messages to assist with further technical investigations by SARS.
