Chrome Ore Export Control: Call for Public Comment
Brought to you by SA Legal Academy: In terms of a notice gazetted by the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition, the deadline for public comment on proposed chrome ore export controls has been set for 3 March 2026.
The notice provides stakeholders with a further opportunity to submit representations regarding the placement of chrome ore under export control. This regulatory move follows the initial release of proposals in October 2025 and a Cabinet decision on 25 June 2025, which outlined a range of measures intended to revitalise South Africa’s chrome industry across its value chain.
The primary objectives of the proposed intervention include:
- Improving the long-term viability and competitiveness of the domestic chrome industry;
- Supporting the domestic beneficiation of chrome ore; and
- Ensuring the sustainability of the value chain in response to global market dynamics.
Stakeholders have until 3 March 2026 to submit their comments to the Department. This consultation is part of a broader policy framework aimed at industrial revitalisation and the protection of domestic mineral processing capabilities.
What this means for you, your business, or your clients
- For yourself: No direct individual obligations; impact is channelled through professional advisory roles for mining and industrial firms.
- For your business: Firms involved in the extraction, trading, or logistics of chrome ore must evaluate the potential impact of export restrictions on existing supply contracts and future operational planning.
- For your clients: Clients in the chrome mining and ferrochrome production sectors should be advised to submit formal representations by the 3 March 2026 deadline to ensure their commercial interests are considered in the final regulatory framework.
