Deputy Commissioners Appointed to the Competition Commission

Brought to you by SAnews: The Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition has appointed two Deputy Commissioners to the Competition Commission to reinforce executive enforcement and merger control capacity under the Competition Act, No. 89 of 1998.

In terms of the statutory governance framework of the Competition Act, No. 89 of 1998, Minister Parks Tau appointed Busikhosibakhe David Majenge and Tamara Leigh Mokoka as Deputy Commissioners, with their appointments taking effect from 1 September 2026.

The Deputy Commissioners support the Commissioner in overseeing investigative, enforcement, and merger review functions across the market. The appointees bring the following operational backgrounds within the Commission:

  • Busikhosibakhe David Majenge: Previously served as Divisional Manager of Legal Services and Chief Legal Counsel, as well as Acting Deputy Commissioner. He joined the Commission in 2008 as Head of Corporate Compliance, became Principal Legal Counsel in 2009, and led the Legal Services Division from 2014. He holds a BProc and an LLM.
  • Tamara Leigh Mokoka: Previously served as Divisional Manager: Mergers and Acquisitions, directing substantive merger assessments and transaction policy frameworks. She holds a Bachelor of Economics, BCom (Hons), and an MCom in Economics.

The appointments fill permanent statutory leadership vacancies within the primary investigative and prosecuting body established under the Competition Act, ensuring regulatory continuity across corporate transactions and market conduct investigations.
