Brought to you by SA Legal Academy: The Electoral Commission (IEC) has published proposed draft amendments to the regulations governing local government elections for public review and comment.

Published under the Local Government: Municipal Electoral Act, No. 27 of 2000, the draft regulatory amendments seek to update and streamline administrative and procedural mechanisms governing municipal elections across South African municipalities.

Interested parties, political entities, and members of the public are invited to submit written representations and comments on the proposed amendments by no later than 16 September 2026.

What this means for you, your business, or your clients

  • For yourself: Review candidate nomination and registration rules if participating directly in local government electoral processes or acting as an accredited observer.
  • For your business: Assess compliance and contractual timelines if providing civic, administrative, or logistical advisory services to municipal entities or election participants.
  • For your clients: Advise political parties, civic organisations, and independent candidates to review the proposed operational adjustments and submit representations ahead of the 16 September 2026 deadline.
